While it’s still a little warm outside, fall is definitely in the air. The leaves on the trees are just so subtly starting to change color, the nights are cooler, and there is a crisp air to my morning walks with Daphne. This led me to think about one of the standards in fall recipes and decorating: PUMPKINS! I started looking up recipes to make homemade dog treats and thought it might be a perfect opportunity to share with our followers what I found. With September finally here, and our proximity to the Pumpkin Capital of the World, what a great time to share some popular recipes!
Did you know that pumpkin is actually really good for your dog? This article from the AKC is a great resource for highlighting both the pros and cons of pumpkin for your dog, but it can be a great remedy for upset tummies in dogs and is a great source of fiber and nutrients. NOTE: Note that you should NEVER use canned pumpkin pie, as it may contain xylitol, which is toxic to dogs. Read on to see my top three recipes for homemade dog treats with pumpkin!
#1 Peanut Butter and Pumpkin Dog Treats from All Recipes
This recipe from All Recipes has a five-star rating and has over 1,000 ratings so it’s safe to say that this will likely be hit with your pups!
Ingredients Include: whole wheat flour, eggs, canned pumpkin, peanut butter, ground cinnamon, and salt.
This link from the American Kennel Club actually is a three for one, but I like the first recipe! At only two ingredients, its a quick snack to whip up for your pups for a special, wholesome snack and is bound to make your pup begging for more!!
Ingredients include: pumpkin puree and plain yogurt.
#3 Oatmeal Pumpkin Dog Treat Recipe
This recipe by Pook’s Pantry caught my eye because of the oatmeal. Oatmeal is a fantastic for skin and coat health in dogs so what better way to mix it in your dog’s diet than with a treat!
Ingredients: old fashioned oats, pumpkin puree, eggs
